Agronomist Well Suited for Unique Position
United Prairie LLC has taken yet another step to set themselves apart from others in the region, hiring Jeff Brown as a full-time regional agronomist.
“It’s unusual for a retail company to have a regional agronomist, and we see his addition as a real asset in terms of the expertise and knowledge we can bring to the table,” says United Prairie General Manager Tim Hughes. “Jeff will be spending most of his time in the field, evaluating products, practices, and platforms for improving yield.”
“My key area of passion is agronomy and specifically the area of soil fertility,” Jeff notes. “One of my primary roles will be product evaluation—taking a look at all of the new products hitting the market each year and making sense of them. I’ll also be helping develop protocols for our test plot cooperators and standardizing the testing processes across our many locations. That will make the data we collect even more relevant and impactful.”
Jeff brings 24 years of ag retail experience in central Illinois to his new position. He spent the last six as a technical agronomist with Stone Seed Group—a move he made in part to deepen his understanding of the seed side of the business.
“I have gained a wide range of experience with all aspects of production agriculture,” Jeff states, “and I’ve spent my entire working career in central Illinois, so I understand agriculture in this area intimately.”
Jeff earned his agronomy degree from Purdue University. His wife, Julie, is also a Purdue graduate and currently works in information technology for Monsanto®. They have two daughters: Jana, a recreational therapist in Terre Haute, IN, and Tracy, a student at Illinois State University.
“I’m looking forward to evaluating all the options and passing what I learn on to our sales staff so they can help our customers make good choices that will be economical and profitable for their operations,” Jeff summarizes.
