Decision Time for 2016 Seeds
In our conversations with our customers, we’re talking quite a bit about Roundup Ready 2 Yield® beans versus LibertyLink® beans. Generally, concerns about resistant weeds drive those conversations. In the discussion, we have to acknowledge the fact that there has been a yield drag with LibertyLink simply because they don’t carry the second-generation genetics. That yield gap has been narrowed, however, and if you have problems with weed pressure, you may need to consider Liberty beans. Controlling those yield-robbing weeds will also close the yield gap even further.
On the topic of Roundup Ready 2 Xtend™ soybeans, we’re primarily in a question-answering, rather than a recommendation mode. We have an allocation of Xtend beans, but with import approval from China and system approval from the EPA still pending we’re in a holding pattern.
In general, we’re very pleased with how the corn hybrids we recommended last year performed. Dekalb® 6487 and Wyffels® 7888 pretty much led the way for us. We had very consistent results from Dekalb 6067, 6297, and 6333, so they’ll be in our lineup, along with two newer numbers: Wyffels 7508 and Dekalb 6154.
In soybeans, we’re happy with the Roundup Ready 2 Yield. We saw the full-season, 3.8 beans yield the best this year, but we also had some early 2.9s that you really liked. We’ll have a good mix of both maturities available for 2016.
Seed treatments continue to be an important part of the puzzle, especially since we’ve seen that the early-planted beans are yielding better. Those cooler, wetter early soils provide a good environment for the phytophthora and pythium problems that seed treatments guard against.
When you consider all the factors that go into making a seed decision, it takes a little time to put a plan together the right way. When we have that rainy spell, set up an appointment with your agronomist and put together your plan for 2016. Not surprisingly, seed supplies should be excellent—with the possible exception of Xtend soybeans. We look forward to talking with you soon.
