New Controller Draws on Wealth of Experience
The man who will be watching over United Prairie’s assets brings some of his own to his new position as controller. Tom Veitch has 35 years of experience in a variety of industries to draw on as he provides financial guidance to the company.
A native of Bloomington/Normal, Tom earned a bachelor’s degree in industrial management at Purdue University and a bachelor’s degree in accounting from Illinois State. He spent 16 years with Nestle Foods, and then worked for several years in the banking and construction materials industries. Prior to joining the United Prairie team, Tom worked in the FS Growmark system as the controller for Piatt County Service Company in Monticello.
“I was attracted to United Prairie by the opportunities the job presented and by the chance to work with Tim Hughes, who I knew pretty well as a competitor,” Tom says. “Though I haven’t been here long, I’m impressed. I’ve already figured out that the greatest company resource is the people who work here.”
Tom notes that while his primary goals as controller are to maintain the sound financial policies and practices of United Prairie and help ensure the long-term success of the company, he also plays an active role in fulfilling the company’s mission.
“As a company, we’re committed to improving profitability for the farmers we serve,” he says. “Where I play a role is by helping procure at competitive prices, which in turn enables us to price them competitively for our farm customers.”
Tom and his wife, Susan, live in Mahomet. Their son, Wes, is a recent Illinois State graduate, and daughter Hillary is an Illinois State junior. A former marathon runner, Tom still enjoys daily recreational running for fun and relaxation.
