Time to Test
Spring soil testing. Now is the time to be thinking about what fields you will need to have soil tested. By sampling fields with young standing crops in May and June, we can analyze the results and nutrient plans can be developed during the summer so there is no delay in the fall between harvest and fall field operations. Having the results in hand also allows for early lime dumping discounts as well as getting ahead of the lime supply which seems to diminish greatly in October.
Spring sampling works best in soybean fields following corn. In corn on corn fields it is usually best to sample in the fall as nitrogen tends to skew the pH test and it is not as reliable. Beginning this year, we will be testing all samples for buffer pH, CEC, Magnesium, and Calcium. We believe there are some different management strategies available utilizing this additional information.
