There has been a lot of hype over UAV’s and “Drones” lately and what we can do with them. We believe that they can provide a unique point of view for scouting purposes. We currently have a quadcopter that is equipped with a digital camera and we put it to the test already by capturing images of some water logged fields. While ours is a pretty simple unit, they can range in price from the hundreds of dollars to tens of thousands of dollars. There are many that are equipped with NDVI cameras for capturing crop health images. Currently we don’t have the ability to capture NDVI with our UAV, but we have had the ability to obtain inexpensive high res NDVI imagery for several years. Currently using a drone to capture this imagery is still expensive and time consuming. Currently, there isn’t really any substitute for actually going out and scouting your fields, having an NDVI image you will provide you a lot more information on where you should focus your scouting efforts, but you will still need to ground truth any of the poor areas in the image to see what the issue actually is. With all of the technology available to us these are exciting times in agriculture. While no single piece of technology is a sole solution, we can use all of it to our advantage to make smarter decisions in the field. If you are interested in obtaining some imagery, give us a call and we can tell you about the many different options that are currently available.
